Florida code for your area is R-38 (see explanation to the left), which means attic insulation needs to be at least 13.25" high.
My insulation amount is low.
If your insulation is low, then your conditioned air will escape through your ceiling.
This causes your AC unit to work extra hard, which also raises your electric bill.
There are wet marks on my ceiling.
Your attic insulation may be wet and needs to be replaced.
You may have leaky ductwork producing condensation, which needs to be replaced.
There is mold on the outside of one or more of my vents.
Mold present on the outside of a vent indicates high humidity/moisture at that location. This can be caused by one or more of the following:
Ductwork/boots that are not fully sealed at the vent, causing air leaks which produce moisture.
Insufficient levels of insulation in the attic causing an inadequate buffer between the temperature of the conditioned air in the room and the temperature of the air in the attic, causing moisture.
Air leaks in your ductwork causing moisture.
Mold in your ductwork.
Solution is to ensure all of your ductwork/boots are fully sealed, ensure your level of insulation in the attic is sufficient and to have a duct cleaning.
My system is running too much and my electric bills are high.
Your attic insulation may be low, meaning you don't have enough of a buffer to keep your conditioned air from escaping through the ceiling.
Remember, your insulation needs to be at least R38 in our climate zone.
